AC Mold Checklist: Is There Mold In Your Air Conditioner?

Mold loves the dark, damp inside of an air conditioner, and the AC blows whatever grows in there into the air your family breathes. Check every sign that applies. Takes 2 minutes.

1. What You Can See

Grab a flashlight. Look at the vents, grilles, drain pan, and anywhere air comes out.

Dark spots, specks, or fuzzy patches on or around air vents and grilles Visible dark growth inside the unit, on the coil, blower wheel, or foam insulation Black ring, slime, or standing water in the drain pan (window and portable units) Discoloration or staining on the wall or ceiling around a vent or the air handler Constant condensation or dripping on or around the unit

2. What You Can Smell

The nose finds mold before the eyes do.

Musty, earthy, or "old basement" smell when the AC kicks on The smell is strongest near vents or in one specific room The smell fades when the AC has been off for a while

3. How Your Household Feels

Patterns matter more than any single symptom.

Sneezing, congestion, or irritated eyes that get worse when the AC is running Symptoms improve noticeably when away from home for a day or more Coughing, wheezing, or asthma flare-ups at home Unexplained headaches or fatigue that seem tied to being home Someone in the home has asthma, serious allergies, a weakened immune system, or is an infant or elderly

4. Risk Conditions

These don't prove mold, but they create the conditions it needs.

You live in a humid climate (Southeast, Gulf Coast, coastal areas) The condensate drain line has clogged or leaked before The filter has not been changed in 3 or more months The system has not been professionally serviced in over a year There has been water damage, flooding, or a roof leak near the unit or ductwork

Your AC Mold Risk

Safety notes: Never put your face close to suspected mold or disturb it dry, and wear an N95 and gloves for any cleanup. The EPA recommends professional remediation for any mold patch larger than about 10 square feet, and mold inside ductwork or on the coil is a job for an HVAC pro, not a DIY spray. If anyone in your home has worsening breathing symptoms, talk to a doctor. This checklist estimates risk, only an inspection can confirm mold.
